The most obvious characteristic of the breed is the half moon shape it should adopt when in show 'pose' , with the tail sticking under the perch forming a clean curve with the body which should be narrow and cylindrical. The shoulders are narrow , barely wider than the fine long neck . The head is narrow and 'snakey' and must be carried forward to compliment the total curve of the bird , but should not be held lower than the shoulder.
The long wings should lay comforatbly along the body and the tail , slightly open at the tips but not forked , should complete the overall half-moon shape. The thighs should be visable and the legs held slighty bent , not straight.
At 11cm (4 1/3") the Hoso is the smallest of the exhibition posture canaries accepted by the Confederation Ornithologique Mondiale as a unique breed in 1974 .
The Hoso and its companion breeds are exhibited in the Border / Fife show cage and are close rung for exhibition . The Hoso ring is 2.5mm (UK size D ) .
Welcome to the official website of the Hoso Canary Breeders Alliance.
The H.C.B.A. was formed to promote the keeping , breeding & exhibiting of the Hoso posture canary , and its companion breeds , in a sound , ethical and healthy environment. The aims of the Alliance are to preserve the present accepted style , size and characteristics of the breeds whilst at the same time encouraging improvement in quality and distinction.
Breeding and exhibiting Hoso canaries is a vastly rewarding hobby that is enjoyed by people of all ages and from all walks of life and the Alliance is here to assist those wishing to take up the hobby or to advise established breeders looking for a new challenge. The Hoso is a free breeding variety of canary that is surprisingly virile given its diminutive size , with its crescent or 'half moon ' show pose being pleasing to the eye .
